Dr. Jan-Henri Hanna, President of Beni Suef Technological University, chaired a meeting of the Committee for Equal Opportunities, Anti- Discrimination against Women, and Supporting People of Determination, to discuss the necessary arrangements to implement the “16 Days” campaign to combat gender-based violence sponsored by the Ministry of Local Development in coordination with Beni Suef Governorate. This comes in the light of The national strategy for empowering women in its four main axes, which starts on November 25 and concludes on December 10, 2023, coinciding with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
During the meeting, the university president listened to the suggestions of the committee members related to the campaign, which included establishing a center for raising awareness within the university to call for an end to violence against women and to raise awareness of the services provided by various agencies to support women. The suggestions also included organizing a sports event on campus with the participation of students, teaching staff members, and a number of Public figures, in addition to holding an art competition among students entitled “They and They” to combat violence against women.
Dr. Jan also reviewed other suggestions from committee members, which included organizing a march for students and teaching staff members on the tourist walkway in Beni Suef wearing orange to support ending violence against women, and holding personal safety workshops in which women are taught how to defend themselves, strengthen self-confidence, and how to deal with those violence accidents, and another suggestion regarding activating the Allied Men Initiative, which includes forming a group of men who support women’s issues, in addition to holding a symposium on electronic harassment and combating blackmail and electronic violence crimes.
It is worth noting that the Committee for Equal Opportunities, Anti- Discrimination against Women, and Supporting People of Determination aims to empower women, preserve their rights, confront and eliminate forms of discrimination against women within the university, remove its effects, whether economic, social, or psychological ones, and support people of determination, protect their rights, and integrate them into the university community, spreading awareness and culture, and consolidating the values of equality, equal opportunities, and non-discrimination in this field.
