Under the patronage of Dr. Jean-Henry Hanna, President of Beni Suef University of Technology, the Equal Opportunities Unit organized a workshop on the personal safety of girls, how to defend themselves and deal with incidents of violence and harassment, as part of the activities of the 16-day campaign to eliminate violence against women. The workshop also comes within the framework of a series of workshops held by the unit to introduce its objectives and mechanisms and how to deter images of violence, harassment and bullying against women and people of determination.
The workshop dealt with developing the skills of girls and women through training on how to defend themselves, and how to act in cases of violence and harassment, where the Korean volunteer “Yoo Soon-hen” taught the participants some defensive movements in the art of taekwondo to strengthen self-confidence, and enhance the body’s physical and technical capabilities against potential dangers.
The Korean volunteer stressed that taekwondo is suitable for girls in light of the continuous incidents of harassment by some reckless young people, who underestimate women, consider them inferior and reduce their physical ability. She stressed that women do not necessarily have to be weak to learn and practice taekwondo, as it is not just sports movements, as martial arts help to gain more confidence in addition to maintaining fitness, through regular exercise.
For his part, the President of the University stressed the strong support of the Unit for Equal Opportunities and Combating Violence against Women, by holding many events, seminars and training workshops more, to provide psychological support to the participants and confront violence and discrimination against women. In addition to creating a student team capable of dealing with various events and also able to spread awareness in various legal, religious, cultural and social aspects.
